VISIT THE SS MONTGOMERY
78 years ago, American WWII cargo ship the SS Montgomery was wrecked in the Thames Estuary. Since then, she has sat on the riverbed carrying 1400 tonnes of explosives! Her infamous masts poke out of the water, a warning to sea goers of the dangers lying beneath....
The wreck's masts are due to be carefully removed in a long process this year. Come see it before it is gone forever!

ABANDONED MAUNSELL
SEA FORTS
Only reachable by boat, the Maunsell Forts were built in 1942 to protect the Thames Estuary from the enemy in WWII. They were abandoned in the 1950s and left to rot before a pirate radio station took up base there in the 60s. Today, they are left rusting, a huge contrast to the lives they saved in the war. (The occupying soldiers shot down 22 planes and 30 bombs!)
